How to Disable Junk Mail in Outlook

Microsoft Outlook is a great and underrated app. Many don’t realize that it can actually sync up with Gmail or another third-party email service and give you some pretty advanced options. Microsoft Outlook also has a solid junk mail filter that can organize spam and junk mail into appropriate sections.

However, for some reason, junk mail filters tend to recognize some legitimate emails as spam, sending them to junk/spam folders. As a result, you won’t get an email notification. If you miss an important email, it could potentially have serious consequences.

Keep reading to find out how to deal with it.

When to Do It

If you’ve never looked into the junk/spam folder, this is not for you. If you’ve never waited for an email for ages that simply didn’t show up in your inbox, the junk mail filter is the least of your worries. However, if the junk and spam sections have “eaten” your expected mail multiple times, you may be better off with the junk filter turned off.

The worst of it is not when you have to go through the junk/spam folder when expecting an important email. The worst part here is missing important emails that you didn’t expect. These can be job offers, promotion notifications, bank and social security warnings, you name it. A serious oversight can happen easily and you will have no one to blame but yourself and your server.

The Solution

There is a solution that doesn’t require you to totally disable your junk mail filter. After all, this tool filters through a huge number of real spam emails that you don’t want in your inbox. You should add the email address that you’ve missed an important mail from to the list of trusted addresses. Unfortunately, this solution is no guarantee that email messages from legitimate senders that aren’t on the list won’t end up in junk or spam folders.

To do this, go to the junk folder and find the email that was mistakenly sent there. Select it and go to the Outlook’s Home tab, then click Junk, and finally, in the drop-down menu, click Not Junk. A dialog box will appear. In it, check Always trust e-mail from [email address in question]. Now, click OK. This will automatically move the emails from this address to your inbox. It will also make sure that the future messages from this sender won’t be misplaced.

You can also add all email addresses that you trust to the list of Safe Senders. This will stop the junk filter from sending emails from the listed addresses to junk. To do this, go to the junk folder, select the sender that you trust, right-click on it, and click Junk > Never Block Sender. You can also do this manually from Junk Email Options.

Turn the Filter off

Keep in mind that turning the automatic junk filter off will likely land you with multiple daily spam mail notifications. Naturally, you can send them to the junk folder manually. Here’s how to turn the junk filter off.

First, go to the Home tab in Outlook. Then, navigate to Junk, click it, and select Junk E-mail Options from the drop-down menu. A dialog box will appear. Go to the Options tab and select No Automatic Filtering. Select the Mail from blocked senders is still moved to the Junk Email folder option and click OK. This will instruct Outlook to let through all mail, except from the sources your manually blocked.

Review Junk Mail

If the Permanently delete suspected junk e-mail instead of moving it to the Junk E-mail folder option is selected in Junk E-mail Options, you won’t even get a chance to review the email that your server may have deemed “junk.” To give every email a second chance, uncheck this box. It is located in the Options tab.
