How To Edit or Delete a Segment in Strava

Have you created a segment and want to change it? Want to move the start or end point or add something? This tutorial is going to cover editing or deleting segments in Strava.

Segments are an integral part of Strava for competitive users and an irrelevance for others. They don’t get in the way if you don’t use them and can add that extra element of competition if you do use them. The desire to push, to climb the KOM or QOM ladder or to get a PR are all great psychological tricks to get more out of a ride.

If you create your own segments, you can then make them public for other users in your area to share. You can also edit or delete segments if you need to. I have never needed to delete a segment but have edited a few in my time on Strava.

How to edit a segment in Strava

As far as I know, you can only edit or delete segments you have created. If your route includes segments created by others, you cannot edit those. You can find the segments you have created in the My Segments part of the app or website. As I tend to do any modifications on the web, these instructions will use that rather than the app.

  1. Log into Strava.
  2. Select Dashboard and My Segments.
  3. Select the Created Segments tab to see those you can edit.
  4. Select the segment you want to edit from the list and it will open with the map view.
  5. Select Edit from the small menu to the right of the map and make your changes.
  6. Select Save once done.

If you just want to change the name, you can do this from the Leaderboard page for that segment. As long as you created it, you can hover your cursor over the name and you should see an edit option. Select that, change the name and you’re good to go. If you don’t see an edit option, that’s not the segment you created.

Finding a segment to edit in Strava

If you’re planning to edit a segment, chances are you will know where it is and on what run or ride. If you don’t, you can use search to find it. You will need to know the name of the specific segment or you can use the map.

To use search, select the magnifying glass icon at the top next to the Strava header image. Select the dropdown by Athletes and change it to Segments. Type the name into the box to search.

How to delete a segment in Strava

You can delete a segment you created in exactly the same way. You follow the same steps as above but select Delete instead of Edit and your segment will disappear once you confirm. Again, you can only delete segments you create and not those you ran or rode but were created by others.

Follow Steps 1 to 5 above but select Delete rather than Edit to delete a segment.

Hide or show segments in Strava

Another useful segment management tip is the ability to show or hide them in Strava. If you’re running or riding in dense areas with lots of segments they can become a distraction. You can select to hide some of them to thin out the results page so you can make more sense of it.

This is useful if you’re running a half or full marathon, riding a sportive or participating in another mass event. These are usually run in very popular areas that already have a ton of segments. Hiding them can help you focus on that specific event performance rather than just the segments.

  1. Select your event from your Strava Dashboard.
  2. Scroll down to Segments and highlight the segment you want to hide.
  3. Select the Hide button that appears on the right of each highlight.
  4. Repeat until you have the segments you’re interested in.

The downside of doing this to better understand a particular result is that it will hide that segment everywhere in Strava rather than just on the one result. If you want to make it visible again, scroll to the bottom of the results page where you hid a segment and select Show Hidden Efforts. Select a hidden segment and select Unhide on the right. This will make them visible again.

The other thing about hidden segments is that hiding them also suppresses the achievements or PRs for them. This makes sense as you’re hiding it anyway but if you’re counting PRs, you will need to unhide that ihttps://www.novodasoftware.com/ndividual segment.
